September 2020 Monthly Wrap-Up

Two months in and going strong!

Welcome to our first monthly wrap up post! As with most things for a new channel we are constantly evolving as we find our groove. What does this mean for you, reader? First, it means you get to experience different things and watch us grow and change. It also means you’ve seen the before and after, and since you’re a human, you’ve got some thoughts about it.

So, if you notice we’ve made a change and maybe dropped some formatting or an approach that you like, let us know! Or if there’s something we are not yet doing you’d like to see from us, let us know! In general we take feedback and direction really well, especially Emily….no one survives a 5+ year PhD program without being able to handle feedback and y’all are MUCH nicer than a thesis committee.

What's new?

Changes to the review templates - organization is queen

Onward to some changes! You may have noticed we’ve made some tweaks to our review templates over the last month. This is in an effort to better organize the information in a way that makes it easier to skim to your favorite bits. To that end, we’ve expanded on the ‘parent perspective’ and added some headings for things we were already talking about in that section, e.g interruptions.

All the kids / family games we cover are awesome

We’ve also decided to drop our rating altogether on our monthly kids game review. Since we only do one per month, and it is not the focus of our channel, we are only reviewing our (and our kids’) favorites.  It’s literally impossible to force a 3 year old to do something they don’t want to do anyway!

What the heck does 3 stars mean?

Going forward we will also be updating our rating system from a 5 point scale to a 10 point scale similar to the one on BGG. Three stars is starting to feel like too much of a cop out and too many games are falling into the 3-4 range that really deserve to be differentiated more. We hope to eventually go back into our previous reviews to update them to the new rating system once we settle on it.

Getting personal

Speaking of settling things…our basement (aka the future board game & entertaining space) now has walls! Like real walls instead of framing that we pretend are walls! It’s all very exciting and we go downstairs every day as soon as the crew leaves to imagine what it will be in a few short weeks! Stay tuned this month for an update post!

Also: A month of roll 'n writes (draw 'n write, flick 'n write)

We added a number of roll ‘n write games to our collection this month, always on the hunt for fun, quick games that we can squeeze in around the kids and everything else.
